Simple goitre caused by deficiency: what you should know

Iodine is used to make thyroid hormones. When the thyroid cannot obtain enough, it may enlarge as it works harder to maintain hormone production. A goitre can also occur when iodine intake is adequate, including with autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroid nodules, or hormone overproduction. The swelling therefore does not identify deficiency by itself.

Some people notice neck fullness, a visible swelling, cough, hoarseness, or pressure when swallowing; others have no symptoms beyond the enlargement. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are separate patterns that can be checked rather than assumed from the appearance of the neck.

Arrange a GP consultation for an examination and a discussion of diet, supplements, medicines, and relevant medical history. A thyroid function test helps show how the gland is working. Do not start concentrated iodine supplements without advice: excess iodine can also disturb thyroid function. Use ordinary dietary sources as recommended locally, especially if pregnant or managing another thyroid condition.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, or sudden swelling of the neck. Seek prompt review for rapid growth, persistent voice change, a firm or uneven lump, or symptoms such as marked palpitations, fainting, severe drowsiness, or profound weakness.

Ask whether deficiency is plausible from your diet and location, which tests can distinguish it from thyroid disease, and whether supplements are appropriate. Ask how the swelling will be monitored and which new symptoms should trigger earlier review.
