Silicone gel for a hypertrophic scar

A hypertrophic scar is raised, firm scar tissue that stays within the edges of the original injury. It can be red, itchy, tight, or uncomfortable, especially while it is still active. Silicone gel forms a thin protective layer over the scar and may help regulate the surface environment.

This is not the same as a keloid, which grows beyond the wound edges. A clinician can examine the scar before you commit to a treatment plan, especially if its shape or symptoms are changing.

Use silicone gel only when the surface is closed and dry. Wash the area gently, pat it dry, and spread a thin layer as directed by the product instructions. Allow it to dry before clothing or another dressing touches it. Stop and seek advice if a persistent rash, blistering, or marked irritation develops.

Consistency matters more than applying a thick coating. If the scar remains raised or restricts movement, a dermatologist may consider steroid injection, fractional laser treatment, or scar revision surgery alongside a tailored skin-care plan.

Contact a clinician for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, bleeding, or wound separation. Book an assessment if the scar is rapidly enlarging, crosses the original wound boundary, or remains troublesome despite regular care.

Ask when the scar is ready for gel, how often to apply it, whether the diagnosis is hypertrophic scar or keloid, and which treatment is suitable if itching or tightness continues.
