Silicone Bandage for Burns: What to Know

A silicone sheet or bandage creates a flexible layer over scar tissue. This can support a more hydrated, calmer scar surface and may reduce tightness, itch, or firmness while the scar matures. It is intended for skin that has fully closed. A fresh burn, blister, weeping area, or infected wound needs burn care rather than a scar dressing. Raised scars can extend beyond the original injury and may need assessment for keloid behaviour.

Clean and dry the healed skin before applying the product. Begin with a short wear period to check for redness, rash, or soreness, then follow the product instructions or your clinician’s plan. Keep the material clean, avoid placing it over broken skin, and stop if the skin becomes persistently irritated. Scar improvement is gradual and depends on the burn, its location, and how the skin responds. Other options may include steroid injection into the skin, fractional laser treatment, pulsed dye laser treatment, or keloid removal surgery.

Seek prompt medical care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, worsening pain, or a burn that has not closed. Arrange a dermatology review if the scar grows beyond the burn edge, becomes very tight, limits movement, or keeps itching despite careful use. Sudden swelling or a new wound under the bandage also warrants removal and assessment.

Ask whether the burn is healed enough for silicone, how long to wear the bandage each day, and whether the scar’s height or position suggests another treatment.
