Silent Crohn's disease: subtle symptoms to notice

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory condition that can affect different parts of the digestive tract. Some people have intermittent symptoms rather than dramatic flares. Repeated abdominal discomfort, looser or more frequent stools, urgency, reduced appetite, tiredness, or unexplained weight change may be clues. Crohn's disease commonly presents with abdominal pain and diarrhoea, but these symptoms also have many other causes. The pattern, duration, examination, and test results help a clinician decide what needs investigation.

Keep a brief record of bowel frequency, stool changes, pain location, appetite, energy, and any blood or mucus. Book a GP consultation when symptoms persist, recur, or affect daily activities. Do not start restrictive diets or stop prescribed medicines without advice. A clinician may arrange a blood test to look for signs of inflammation or other contributors and may consider further assessment based on the findings.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt review is also needed for persistent diarrhoea with marked weakness or signs of dehydration. Early assessment can distinguish a quiet inflammatory condition from infection, medication effects, or another bowel problem.
