Signs of threadworms in humans

Threadworms, also called pinworms, are small intestinal worms. At night, adult worms can move to the skin around the anus to lay eggs, causing itching that interrupts sleep. Scratching may make the skin sore or irritated and can transfer eggs to fingers, clothing, bedding, and household surfaces. Some people have few symptoms. Children may become restless, and bedwetting or abdominal pain can occur, but these signs have many possible causes and do not confirm threadworms.

Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before eating, keep fingernails short, and bathe or shower in the morning. Change underwear and sleepwear regularly, wash bedding and towels, and avoid shaking them. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on treatment for the affected person and household members; follow the product instructions closely. Arrange assessment if itching continues after recommended treatment, the skin becomes very sore, there is persistent abdominal pain, or you see worms but are unsure what they are.
