Understanding the illness
Stomach flu is a common name for gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Viruses are frequent causes, although other infections can produce a similar pattern. Rotavirus infection is one possible cause, particularly in children. Symptoms can occur together or develop one after another. Abdominal discomfort often comes with frequent loose stools, while nausea and vomiting can make drinking difficult. Loss of appetite is common while the digestive system is irritated.
How to care for yourself
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Rest, and return to plain foods as your appetite allows. Wash hands with soap and water, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and clean contaminated bathroom surfaces. Watch for dehydration, including a dry mouth, unusual thirst, dizziness, very dark urine, or passing urine less often. Read more about Dehydration, Gastroenteritis, and Rotavirus Infection.
When medical advice is needed
Seek prompt care if you cannot keep fluids down, have blood in vomit or stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, or signs of dehydration. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for a high or persistent fever, a vulnerable infant, pregnancy, older age, or a condition that makes fluid loss more concerning. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe weakness, or reduced alertness.
Useful questions
Ask how much fluid you should take, whether a medicine is suitable for your symptoms, and how long you should stay away from work, school, or food preparation. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, blood in stool, fever, and how often you are passing urine.
