Signs of stomach flu in adults

Stomach flu is a common name for gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Nausea, loose or watery stools, vomiting, abdominal pain, reduced appetite, and tiredness may occur together. Fever can accompany infection. The main concern is fluid loss: thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, or passing urine less often can point to dehydration.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting settles, try plain foods in small portions and return gradually to normal meals. Wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and stay home from close contact when diarrhoea or vomiting continues. Avoid anti-diarrhoeal medicines unless a clinician advises them, especially with fever or blood in stool.

Seek prompt medical care for signs of dehydration, persistent vomiting, severe or localised abdominal pain, blood or black stool, high fever, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Emergency help is needed for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to keep any fluid down.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gastroenteritis, how much fluid replacement is appropriate, and which medicines are safe with your health conditions. Mention recent travel, antibiotics, sick contacts, or unusual foods.
