Signs of severe dengue

Dengue Fever can begin with fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain and chills. A dangerous deterioration may appear as the fever settles rather than while it is at its highest. Warning changes include severe belly pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, easy bruising, marked weakness, confusion, restlessness, pale clammy skin or breathing difficulty. These signs can reflect fluid loss or problems with circulation and need prompt assessment.

Seek urgent medical care if any warning sign appears, particularly after several days of fever. Encourage small, frequent fluids if the person is awake and able to swallow, and rest them in a cool, safe place. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically advises them because bleeding can be a concern. Record medicines, fluid intake, vomiting, bleeding and the timing of fever changes.

Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, a seizure, cold clammy skin, severe weakness or inability to drink. Go urgently for persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, new bruising or bleeding, very little urine, or unusual sleepiness. Do not wait for every warning sign to occur. A GP Consultation is appropriate for suspected dengue without emergency features, but deterioration needs emergency care.
