Signs of preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related condition involving blood pressure and possible effects on organs. Some people have no noticeable symptoms, which is why antenatal checks include blood pressure and urine testing. Headache that does not settle, flashing lights or blurred vision, upper abdominal pain, vomiting later in pregnancy, breathlessness or rapid swelling of the face and hands should not be dismissed as ordinary pregnancy discomfort.

Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team promptly if you notice a warning sign, even if you are unsure. They may check blood pressure, urine, blood tests and the baby's wellbeing. Keep appointments and take prescribed medicines as directed. Treatment and monitoring depend on your health, pregnancy stage and test results; delivery may be discussed if continuing the pregnancy becomes unsafe.

Go to emergency maternity care immediately for severe or persistent headache, major vision changes, severe upper abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, seizure, collapse or a strong feeling that something is wrong. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or seriously unwell.
