Signs of ovarian hyperstimulation

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, often called OHSS, is a reaction to fertility medicines that stimulate the ovaries. The ovaries may become enlarged, and fluid can move from the bloodstream into the abdomen. Mild symptoms may include bloating, pressure, nausea, and discomfort. More serious illness can cause persistent vomiting, reduced urination, chest discomfort, breathing difficulty, or marked abdominal swelling. Symptoms may appear after treatment and can worsen if pregnancy occurs, so timing should be reported to the fertility team.

Contact your fertility clinic when symptoms begin, giving details about pain, vomiting, urine output, breathing, and any rapid change in body weight. Follow the clinic's fluid and activity advice, take only medicines they approve, and attend monitoring appointments. Do not wait for a scheduled review if symptoms are progressing. Your team may arrange examination, blood tests, ultrasound, and monitoring of hydration and circulation.

Go to emergency care for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or sudden marked swelling. These signs can indicate fluid imbalance, a blood clot, kidney strain, or ovarian twisting. Tell the emergency team that you recently used fertility medicines, and mention whether pregnancy is possible.
