Signs of low vitamin D in pregnancy

Short answer
Low vitamin D in pregnancy may cause no clear symptoms, but tiredness, muscle weakness, bone or muscle aches and changes in mood can occur and need assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Symptoms
- Some people have no clear symptoms.
- Assessment
- Symptoms alone cannot confirm low vitamin D; testing may be considered.
Why symptoms can be difficult to recognise
Pregnancy itself can bring tiredness and body aches, so symptoms do not confirm a vitamin D deficiency. Tiredness that is severe, persistent or accompanied by breathlessness, palpitations or fainting can have other causes, including anaemia, and should be discussed. A clinician considers your symptoms, diet, health history and risk factors and may recommend a blood test.
What to do during pregnancy
Mention ongoing tiredness, muscle weakness or bone pain at antenatal care. Bring a list of supplements and medicines, including dose labels, so your clinician can check the full intake. Do not start high-dose vitamin D or combine products without advice. Your team can explain whether testing is useful and whether a pregnancy-appropriate supplement plan is suitable; an Antenatal Care Package may include opportunities to review these concerns.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing or symptoms that make it hard to stay safe. Contact your maternity team promptly for persistent bone pain, worsening muscle weakness or marked tiredness that interferes with daily activities. Mention reduced baby movements immediately according to your maternity unit’s instructions; do not attribute this symptom to vitamin D.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask whether your symptoms need a blood count or vitamin D test, which supplement is appropriate in pregnancy, how to avoid overlapping ingredients, and when symptoms should be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can tiredness in pregnancy mean low vitamin D?
It can occur with low vitamin D, but tiredness has many possible causes in pregnancy and needs a broader assessment.
Should I take extra vitamin D if I am concerned?
Discuss the dose and product with your maternity clinician first, especially if another supplement already contains vitamin D.
