Signs of labour after a membrane sweep

A sweep separates the membranes near the cervix to encourage the body’s natural labour process. A small amount of blood-stained mucus may be a show. Labour is more suggestive when contractions become longer, stronger and more regular, with less relief between them. Some people notice no immediate change, and the sweep may not lead to labour.

Rest, drink fluids, use comfort measures recommended by your maternity team and note contraction timing. Keep your maternity contact details nearby. Do not insert anything into the vagina unless your clinician has advised it. If labour develops, follow the personalised instructions you were given; induction of labour is a separate planned process that may be discussed if needed.

Contact your maternity team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, reduced baby movements, fever, feeling very unwell, or fluid leaking continuously. Call promptly if you think your waters have broken, contractions are becoming regular and difficult to manage, or you are unsure whether a change is normal. Follow your local maternity unit’s instructions because advice can vary with pregnancy circumstances.
