Signs of irregular periods: what they can mean

Short answer
Irregular periods can mean bleeding comes at changing intervals, lasts unusually long, is very light or heavy, or stops for a while.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Bleeding dates, duration, flow and spotting.
- Possible contributors
- Ovulation changes, life-stage changes and medical conditions.
What the pattern may mean
A changing cycle can happen when ovulation is inconsistent, during the transition towards menopause, or with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Anovulation means an egg is not released in a cycle and can lead to unpredictable bleeding. Premature ovarian insufficiency can also affect periods earlier than expected. These patterns do not identify one cause by themselves.
What to do next
Record the first day of bleeding, how long it lasts, how heavy it feels, spotting between periods, pain, medicines and pregnancy possibility. Arrange a clinical review if the pattern persists, changes suddenly, or concerns you. A clinician may discuss pregnancy testing, medicines, hormone symptoms and possible tests. Treatment depends on the cause and whether you are trying to conceive; options can include the Combined Pill or Metformin for PCOS when appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding with dizziness, fainting, breathlessness or weakness, severe pelvic pain, or bleeding during pregnancy. Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after sex, repeated bleeding between periods, or no period with pregnancy possibility. An irregular pattern itself is not a measure of how serious the underlying cause is.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what cycle changes are most relevant, whether your symptoms suggest inconsistent ovulation, which tests may clarify the cause, and how any treatment could affect contraception or pregnancy plans.

Questions people ask
Can stress make periods irregular?
Stress and other changes in health or routine can affect ovulation and bleeding patterns, but persistent changes still deserve assessment.
Does one unusual period prove a condition?
No. One changed cycle cannot establish a diagnosis; the pattern and accompanying symptoms provide more useful context.
