What does indigestion feel like in pregnancy?
Symptoms often become more noticeable after a large, rich, or spicy meal, when lying down, or later in pregnancy as the growing uterus changes pressure inside the abdomen. Heartburn and reflux can occur together, but severe or unusual pain should not be assumed to be indigestion.
Why it can happen
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle that normally keeps stomach contents from moving back into the food pipe. Digestion may also slow, and physical pressure can make reflux easier. These changes can produce symptoms similar to Acid Reflux, Gastritis, or a Hiatus Hernia, while Gallstones or a Peptic Ulcer may cause different pain that needs evaluation.
Indigestion itself describes a symptom pattern rather than one single disease. Persistent symptoms may lead a clinician to consider Helicobacter Pylori Infection or another cause, particularly if there is vomiting, bleeding, or difficulty swallowing.
Ways to ease symptoms
Try smaller meals more often, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after a meal, and notice whether particular foods, caffeine, or fizzy drinks trigger symptoms. Raising the head of the bed can help night-time reflux; use pregnancy-safe positioning advice from your maternity team.
Check before taking an over-the-counter product, herbal remedy, or antacid because pregnancy changes which medicines are suitable. A clinician or pharmacist can advise about Acid Reflux Medication and how to use it safely with other medicines and supplements.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, chest pain with breathlessness or faintness, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or trouble swallowing. Contact your maternity service promptly for severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or pain under the ribs.
Arrange a routine review when symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, cause poor eating, or do not improve with simple measures. Mention exactly where the discomfort is, when it starts, and any medicines you have tried.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which foods and positions may help, which medicines are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, and whether your symptoms need testing. Tell the clinician about vomiting, weight change, bleeding, swallowing problems, or pain that is not linked to meals.
