Signs of exhaustion

Short answer
Exhaustion can involve overwhelming tiredness, reduced concentration, poor stamina, unrefreshing sleep, irritability, and difficulty managing ordinary tasks.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What exhaustion can mean
Exhaustion is more than wanting an early night: it can affect thinking, movement, mood, and the ability to recover after rest. Short-term strain, missed sleep, intense activity, emotional stress, infection, heat, or dehydration may explain it. Ongoing fatigue can also occur with anaemia, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, burnout, alcohol use disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, or COVID-19. The pattern matters: note whether symptoms began suddenly, follow exertion, accompany low mood, or include breathlessness, pain, fever, or changes in weight.
Exhaustion is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Its presence does not identify one cause, and a person can have more than one contributor at the same time.
Steps that may help
For a few days, protect a regular sleep routine, eat balanced meals, drink enough fluids, and pace demanding tasks with planned breaks. Gentle activity can be useful if it does not worsen symptoms, while pushing through marked exhaustion may delay recovery. Review alcohol, caffeine, new medicines, and recent illness. If exhaustion lasts, recurs, or limits work, study, self-care, or exercise, arrange a GP assessment and bring a symptom diary.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help for exhaustion with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, black or bloody stools, or thoughts of self-harm. Get prompt medical advice for rapidly worsening weakness, inability to keep fluids down, a persistent high fever, or exhaustion after significant heat exposure. A gradual problem still merits review when rest and routine changes do not restore normal function.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which causes fit your pattern, whether blood tests or other checks are needed, how sleep and mood may contribute, and which activities are safe while your energy is reduced.

Questions people ask
Is exhaustion just normal tiredness?
It can follow ordinary strain, but exhaustion that persists, recurs, or limits daily life deserves assessment.
Can dehydration cause exhaustion?
Yes. Fluid loss can reduce energy and cause dizziness or headache; ongoing or severe symptoms need medical advice.
