Signs of Asherman syndrome

Asherman syndrome involves scar tissue, or adhesions, inside the uterus. The adhesions can reduce the space available for the uterine lining to grow and may obstruct menstrual flow. Symptoms can follow procedures involving the uterus, including treatment after a miscarriage, but not everyone with adhesions has symptoms. Lighter periods or absent periods can have many causes, so the pattern and medical history matter.

Arrange a gynaecology review if your periods change after a uterine procedure, become unexpectedly light, or stop, particularly with cyclical pelvic pain or difficulty conceiving. Bring dates of procedures, bleeding changes, pain patterns, and pregnancy history. Assessment may include a pelvic examination and imaging; a camera examination of the uterus can both identify adhesions and guide treatment.

Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fever, fainting, heavy bleeding, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent cyclical pain with little or no bleeding, or pregnancy difficulties after a uterine procedure. These symptoms do not prove Asherman syndrome, but they deserve a clear explanation.

Ask whether your history suggests intrauterine adhesions, which test is appropriate, whether hysteroscopy is needed, how treatment could affect future fertility, and how the uterine cavity will be monitored afterwards.
