How toxic shock can develop

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious response to toxins made by certain bacteria. It can occur with an infection, including an infection associated with a wound, vagina, or a retained menstrual product. Symptoms may affect several body systems at once, with a person becoming very unwell over a short period. A rash may later peel, but do not wait for that change.

Act immediately

If toxic shock is possible, seek emergency medical help now. Remove a tampon or menstrual cup if one is in place, but do not delay calling for help. Tell clinicians about recent surgery, wounds, childbirth, vaginal products, or infection symptoms. Treatment may include hospital monitoring, fluids, and antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection when that is the suspected source.

Emergency symptoms

Call emergency services for collapse, confusion, trouble breathing, blue or very pale skin, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Fever with a rapidly spreading rash, faintness, or severe pain also needs immediate assessment. Toxic shock is not something to monitor at home while waiting for symptoms to settle.
