Signs and symptoms of strep

People with strep throat often develop a sore throat quickly, with pain when swallowing, fever, tender swollen glands in the neck, headache, or a rough red rash. The tonsils may look inflamed and may have patches. Cough, runny nose, and hoarseness are more suggestive of a viral illness, although symptoms can overlap.

A throat examination cannot always distinguish the cause. A clinician may use a throat swab or another test before deciding whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate. Strep throat is different from measles, which can cause fever and a widespread rash and needs separate assessment.

Arrange a GP consultation for a severe sore throat, fever with swollen neck glands, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that are not improving. Drink fluids, rest, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Do not share cups, utensils, or toothbrushes, and wash hands regularly. Take antibiotics only when prescribed and complete the course as directed.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. Emergency assessment is also needed for a widespread rash with severe fever, confusion, or marked weakness.
