What should you know about signs and symptoms of common cold?

The common cold is an upper-airway infection. Symptoms may include a blocked nose, sneezing, watery eyes, a scratchy throat, mild headache, and a cough that changes as mucus moves from the nose or throat. Some people have a low-grade fever or body aches, while others mainly feel congested and tired. Symptoms can overlap with sinusitis, acute bronchitis, or other infections. In children, a cold can sometimes be followed by croup or a middle-ear infection, so a new barking cough, noisy breathing, or ear pain deserves attention.

Rest, drink fluids, and use warm drinks or saline nasal drops for comfort. A humidified room may ease irritation; avoid smoke and other airway irritants. Wash hands and cover coughs to reduce spread. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using cough or cold products, especially for a young child, during pregnancy, or when taking other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat the viruses that cause ordinary colds.

Seek medical advice for breathing difficulty, chest pain, dehydration, unusual drowsiness, a fever that is severe or persistent, or symptoms that improve and then become markedly worse. A child with noisy breathing, a barking cough, blue lips, or difficulty swallowing needs urgent assessment. Earache, facial pain with worsening congestion, or a cough that lingers should also be reviewed.
