The panel may include measurements associated with liver cells, bile ducts, protein production, and blood clotting. Different patterns can point toward irritation, reduced bile flow, or a change in the liver’s processing ability. Results can be affected by medicines, alcohol use, infections, muscle injury, and other health problems, so one result is not interpreted in isolation. Abnormal results can occur with alcohol use disorder or viral hepatitis A, B, or C, but they do not by themselves identify the cause or severity.

Ask whether you need to fast, take your usual medicines, or avoid alcohol before the blood sample. Bring a complete list of prescriptions, supplements, and non-prescription products, including recent changes. After testing, ask which values are outside the expected range, how they compare with earlier results, and whether repeat testing, imaging, or another test is appropriate. Do not change treatment based on the report without clinical guidance.

Contact a clinician promptly if abnormal results occur with yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, increasing abdominal swelling, unusual bleeding, confusion, or persistent vomiting. Seek urgent help for severe confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, or marked sleepiness. These symptoms can require assessment of liver function and other body systems without waiting for a routine appointment.
