Siemens Oncor linear accelerator: what to know

A linear accelerator creates radiation beams that are directed toward a treatment target. Your plan is based on imaging, measurements, and the intended dose pattern. At each visit, you lie on the treatment couch in the position used during planning. The machine may rotate around you, while staff observe from a control area and can speak with you. The beam is delivered without an incision and the machine does not touch the treatment site.

Follow the team’s instructions about food, fluids, bladder preparation, and medication. Wear clothing that allows access to the treatment area and avoid applying creams or deodorant unless the team approves them. Tell staff before treatment if pain, stiffness, anxiety, or a new medical device could make positioning difficult. Try to keep appointments consistent and mention transport or home-support concerns early so practical help can be arranged.

Contact the treatment team about increasing soreness, peeling or blistering skin, unusual swelling, severe tiredness, or symptoms that stop you eating, drinking, sleeping, or moving normally. Depending on the treated area, report new swallowing difficulty, diarrhoea, urinary problems, cough, or breathlessness promptly. Seek emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, sudden confusion, or new weakness. Do not wait for the next appointment when a symptom is rapidly worsening.
