What should you know about side of hand swollen?

Swelling after a fall, twist, impact, or trapped finger may involve a sprain, tendon irritation, or a fracture such as a distal radius fracture when the wrist was also injured. Redness, warmth, tenderness, or a wound raises concern for infection or significant inflammation. Swelling in several finger joints, especially with prolonged morning stiffness, can occur with inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The side that is swollen, the timing, and your ability to move and grip help guide assessment. Hand swelling is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and a normal-looking skin surface does not exclude a deeper injury.

Remove rings and bracelets early if swelling is developing. Rest from gripping and impact, keep the hand raised when practical, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods after a recent injury. Move the fingers gently if this is comfortable, but do not force a stiff or injured joint or try to straighten an obvious deformity.

A clinician may check circulation, sensation, tendon function, joint stability, and the wrist or forearm as well as the swollen area. Imaging may be needed after trauma; treatment depends on the structure involved and whether inflammation or infection is present.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes blue, pale, cold, very numb, severely painful, or rapidly more swollen. Prompt assessment is needed for a deformity, open wound, fever, spreading redness, or inability to move the fingers. Arrange a review for swelling that persists, returns without a clear injury, or affects grip and daily tasks.

Could this involve a fracture, tendon, joint, or infection? Do I need an X-ray or other test? How should I protect and move the hand? What changes in colour, sensation, or swelling should prompt urgent review?
