Side Effects of Trichomoniasis During Pregnancy

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Some people have no noticeable symptoms; others develop frothy or unusual discharge, an unpleasant smell, itching, soreness, or burning when passing urine. Symptoms can overlap with other vaginal conditions, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Infection in pregnancy deserves prompt discussion with an obstetric or sexual-health clinician.

Arrange testing if you notice new discharge, itching, irritation, or exposure to a partner with trichomoniasis. A clinician can choose a pregnancy-appropriate medicine and advise whether partners need testing and treatment. Avoid sex until you have received clear advice, and do not use leftover medicines or vaginal washes. Using condoms later can reduce reinfection risk.

Contact your maternity team urgently for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions, fever, pelvic pain, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can have causes other than trichomoniasis and need pregnancy-specific assessment.

Ask which test is planned, which treatment is suitable at your stage of pregnancy, whether your partner should attend, and when repeat testing or symptom review is needed.
