Side effects of psoriatic arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can affect joints, tendons and the places where tendons attach to bone. Joint pain and swelling may occur in fingers, toes, knees, ankles or the spine. Morning joint stiffness can make the first part of the day slow, while fatigue may continue after the joints feel calmer. Whole fingers or toes can swell, and nail pitting or skin psoriasis may accompany the joint symptoms. The condition can change over time, so persistent symptoms deserve review even if skin symptoms are mild.

Track which joints swell, how long morning stiffness lasts and whether skin or nail changes flare at the same time. Medical treatment aims to control inflammation and protect function; anti-inflammatory medication may help selected symptoms but is not suitable for everyone. Physiotherapy can build a plan for joint protection, flexibility, strength and pacing. Balance activity with rest, and avoid keeping a swollen joint completely still for long periods unless advised.

Seek prompt care for a suddenly hot, very painful joint with fever, a rapidly worsening flare, or inability to use an arm or leg. New eye pain, redness or sensitivity to light also needs urgent assessment. Arrange routine review when swelling persists, function is declining or treatment side effects concern you.
