What should you know about sickle cell and lung cancer?

Sickle cell disease affects red blood cells and can cause episodes of pain, anaemia and complications involving the lungs. Lung cancer begins when abnormal cells in lung tissue grow and behave differently. Having a sickle cell condition does not, by itself, establish that lung symptoms are cancer.

Possible lung cancer presentations include a cough that does not settle, coughing blood, chest discomfort, breathlessness or a hoarse voice. Sickle cell chest complications can also cause sudden chest pain, fever, cough or breathing difficulty, so the timing and severity of symptoms matter.

Tell the clinician about your sickle cell diagnosis, usual pain pattern, medicines, previous chest episodes, smoking or exposure history and any new change in symptoms. A chest examination and imaging may be needed; further tests depend on what is found. Do not assume a familiar sickle cell symptom is harmless if it is different, severe or persistent.

If lung cancer is confirmed, treatment may involve surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a plan guided by genomic tumour profiling. The oncology and haematology teams should coordinate care so oxygenation, pain control and blood-related risks are considered.

Seek emergency help for sudden or worsening breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, fainting or a high fever with chest symptoms. People with sickle cell disease should follow their personalised emergency plan and contact their care team early during a suspected chest complication. A new hoarse voice, persistent cough or unexplained weight loss also deserves prompt review.
