Shoulder TENS Unit: Safe Use and Expectations

TENS uses mild electrical pulses delivered through adhesive pads on the skin. People commonly feel tingling or tapping rather than a strong muscle contraction. It may make movement or exercise more comfortable for some people, but the effect varies and can fade after the unit is switched off. TENS is an aid for symptom control, not a substitute for finding out why the shoulder hurts.

Follow the device instructions and place pads only on intact skin, with spacing and settings advised by a clinician or manufacturer. Start gently and stop if there is burning, worsening pain, dizziness, or a skin reaction. Do not use it while bathing, sleeping, or driving. Keep pads away from the front or side of the neck, across the chest, and from broken or infected skin. Ask for medical advice before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, or are pregnant.

Seek assessment for sudden weakness, numbness, a deformed shoulder, severe injury pain, fever with a hot swollen joint, or chest symptoms. Arrange review if pain persists despite sensible activity changes or if you need the unit repeatedly to manage ordinary movement.
