Shoulder Reduction Without Sedation

Shoulder reduction without sedation may be considered when the person can tolerate careful positioning and the clinical team judges it safe. It is still a medical procedure, not a self-treatment, and pain control options can be changed if the first approach is not suitable.

The team first checks the shoulder, skin, circulation, sensation, and movement and may use imaging to assess the dislocation and exclude a fracture. A calm environment, local anaesthetic, or other comfort measures may help some people relax the muscles. The clinician uses a slow, controlled technique and does not force the joint against resistance.

Without sedation does not mean without monitoring or discomfort. The plan depends on the injury, muscle spasm, anxiety, previous shoulder problems, available support, and the need for further treatment.

If you suspect a dislocation, keep the arm supported in the most comfortable position and go to urgent care. Do not attempt to relocate it, pull on the arm, or eat and drink until the treating team gives instructions. After reduction, follow advice about support, medication, movement, and rehabilitation. Physiotherapy may later help restore controlled strength.

Seek immediate care for a deformed shoulder, severe pain, or inability to move the arm after an injury. Numbness, worsening weakness, a cold hand, or blue or pale fingers can signal a nerve or blood-flow problem. After reduction, return urgently if the shoulder changes shape again, pain escalates, or sensation and circulation alter.

Ask why sedation is or is not recommended, which comfort measures are available, and what would make the team change the plan. Clarify how the shoulder will be checked afterward and when rehabilitation can start.
