What should you know about shoulder joint reduction?

A dislocation occurs when the ball of the upper arm moves out of the shoulder socket. Reduction is the hands-on treatment used to return it. A clinician first checks circulation, sensation, movement and possible injury around the joint. Pain relief or sedation may be used, depending on the injury and setting. Afterward, repeat examination and sometimes imaging help check the joint and nearby bones.

The shoulder may be supported in a sling for a period advised by the treating team. Keep the arm in the recommended position and follow instructions about bathing, driving and work. Do not force the shoulder through painful movement or try to relocate it yourself.
