Short answer

Shoulder dislocation reduction is a medical procedure that returns the joint to position after assessment; never try to put it back yourself.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First response
Support the arm and seek urgent medical care.
Do not
Attempt self-reduction or pull on the arm.

What reduction involves

A dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the shoulder socket. It may cause severe pain, an unusual contour, inability to move the arm, or altered sensation. In a medical setting, the team checks circulation, sensation, and movement, and may use imaging to look for a fracture. Shoulder reduction uses a controlled technique to guide the joint back into place; pain relief or sedation may be considered. The arm is then supported and the shoulder is reassessed. A history of repeated dislocation can reflect shoulder instability and may affect the longer-term plan.

What to do while waiting

Keep the arm still in the position that is most comfortable and support it with a sling or folded cloth if available. Apply a wrapped cold pack briefly to the surrounding area. Do not pull, rotate, massage, or force the arm back into place, and do not eat or drink in case a procedure is needed. Arrange emergency transport or urgent medical care, particularly after a fall, collision, or sports injury. After reduction, follow the support and movement instructions provided. Physiotherapy usually focuses on restoring motion, strength, and control in stages; recurrent cases may prompt discussion of shoulder stabilisation surgery.

When to seek care

Treat a suspected dislocation as urgent. Call emergency services for severe pain with deformity, a blue or pale hand, absent or worsening sensation, marked weakness, heavy bleeding, or serious trauma. Even if the shoulder seems to slip back by itself, it still needs medical review because bone, tendon, or nerve injury may remain. Return promptly after reduction if pain escalates, the joint changes shape again, or the hand becomes numb or cold.

Questions for your doctor

Was there a fracture or nerve finding? How long should I use support, and which movements are restricted? When should physiotherapy begin? What may reduce the chance of another dislocation, and when would stabilisation surgery be considered?

Questions people ask

Can I reduce a dislocated shoulder at home?

No. Pulling or rotating the arm can worsen injury to bone, blood vessels, nerves, or soft tissues.

Why is follow-up needed after reduction?

Follow-up checks healing, movement, strength, and stability and helps plan rehabilitation or further treatment.
