Shoulder and thumb joint pain

The shoulder and thumb may be affected by separate overuse injuries, tendon irritation, or arthritis. Pain in several joints with fever or a recent illness can occur with influenza, dengue fever, or brucellosis. Gout often causes a sudden, hot, swollen joint, while fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain and tenderness. Hypothyroidism and Long COVID may be associated with aching or stiffness, but the presence of joint pain does not establish any diagnosis. Obesity can add mechanical load to painful joints.

Reduce activities that clearly aggravate the pain without keeping the joints completely still. Use gentle movement within comfort, support the hand during tasks, and apply a wrapped cool or warm pack according to which feels better. Keep a note of swelling, stiffness after rest, fever, recent travel, illness, injury, and whether the thumb or shoulder loses strength. A clinician can examine both areas and review medicines before recommending pain relief or tests.

Get urgent help for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, sudden severe pain after injury, a visibly deformed shoulder, or inability to use the arm. Seek immediate care for new weakness with facial drooping, speech trouble, chest pain, or severe breathlessness. Arrange review when pain persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss or prolonged morning stiffness.

Ask whether the shoulder and thumb appear to have one cause or two, what signs suggest inflammation or infection, and which movements are safe while they recover. Ask whether imaging or blood testing would clarify the pattern.
