Shin Splints Only When Running: What to Know

Short answer
Shin splints only when running often reflect impact loading that exceeds current tissue tolerance, even when walking feels comfortable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why running brings it on
Running adds repeated impact and faster calf and ankle work than walking. A recent increase in distance, speed, hills, intervals, or training days can make the shin sore before everyday movement is affected. Shoes, foot control, and stride length may add to the load. Flat feet can be one factor, but shin pain has several possible causes. A diffuse ache along the inner shin is more typical of shin splints; a pinpoint spot, pain that persists after exercise, or pain at rest needs assessment. See [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/) and [Flat Feet](/conditions/flat-feet/).
How to modify training
Stop the run when symptoms start rather than repeatedly testing the limit. Return to comfortable walking first, then try shorter, slower sessions on level ground with rest between them. Change one training variable at a time and keep a note of the response later that day and the next morning. Strength work for the calf, ankle, and hip can support a gradual return when it does not provoke pain. A physiotherapist can review your form and use [Gait Retraining](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/gait-retraining/) or [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) where suitable.
When to arrange an assessment
Seek an assessment when symptoms recur despite reducing running, interfere with walking, or become sharply localized. Prompt medical attention is appropriate for inability to bear weight, substantial swelling, numbness, weakness, or a foot that becomes unusually cold or pale. A clinician can examine the bone and surrounding tissues and guide the return to impact.
Questions to ask
How should I build running back up? Does my pain pattern need imaging or another examination? Would a change in shoes, technique, or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) help my movement?

Questions people ask
Why do my shins hurt only during runs?
Running creates more repeated impact and muscle demand, which can exceed what the leg currently tolerates.
Can I switch to another exercise?
A low-impact activity may be reasonable if it stays comfortable and does not cause later worsening.
