What should you know about sheath fluid flow cytometry?

In flow cytometry, a liquid sample containing cells is introduced into a stream of sheath fluid. The fluid helps arrange cells so they pass the instrument’s laser region in a controlled way. Detectors then record light scattered by each cell and signals from attached fluorescent markers. A laboratory can use these patterns to describe cell populations, including features that may help distinguish immune or blood-cell groups. Sheath fluid is part of the instrument’s measurement process; it is not a medicine and is not a result that is diagnosed on its own.

The sample may come from blood, bone marrow, a body fluid, or tissue prepared for analysis. A specialist interprets the marker pattern alongside symptoms, examination, blood counts, microscopy, and other tests. Flow cytometry can support the assessment of some blood cancers and immune conditions, but it does not answer every diagnostic question. If the sample was collected during a bone marrow biopsy, the biopsy findings and flow results are considered together. Ask whether the report detected an abnormal cell population, what markers were measured, and whether another sample or test is needed.

The sheath fluid itself does not cause symptoms in the patient during ordinary testing. After a blood draw, seek advice for bleeding that does not stop, increasing swelling, or signs of infection at the puncture site. After a bone marrow biopsy, contact the care team for worsening pain, persistent bleeding, fever, spreading redness, or drainage. Seek urgent care for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness while waiting for results.
