What should you know about sex headache treatment?

A headache linked with sexual activity may be a primary exertional headache, but a sudden first episode can reflect bleeding or a blood-vessel problem. Treatment cannot be chosen safely until a clinician considers the onset, examination findings, neurological symptoms, medicines and relevant health history.

Keep an episode diary with the activity, onset, intensity, duration and associated symptoms. This helps distinguish a stable pattern from a changing one and shows whether the plan is helping.

Get emergency help for a thunderclap headache, fainting, seizure, confusion, new weakness or numbness, speech difficulty, vision loss, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting or severe pain after injury. Contact a clinician promptly if medicine causes concerning effects, the headache changes character, or episodes become more frequent or intense.
