Sex during breakthrough bleeding

Breakthrough bleeding is bleeding outside expected menstrual flow, often while using hormonal contraception or after a change in its use. Sex does not necessarily cause the underlying bleeding, although friction can make visible blood more noticeable or irritate tissue. Chlamydia can cause cervical inflammation and bleeding, while Endometrial Polyps can contribute to irregular bleeding. These conditions present with bleeding in some people; bleeding alone does not identify the cause. Pregnancy is also possible if contraception was missed or not absorbed as expected.

You can choose to have sex if you feel well and it is comfortable, but stop if there is pain or bleeding increases. Use condoms when infection protection is needed, and remember that some contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Take hormonal contraception exactly as prescribed and do not stop it solely because of spotting without advice. Record missed doses, bleeding days, pain, discharge, and any link with sex. Arrange review if the pattern continues or changes.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or a possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Arrange prompt testing if there is unusual discharge, pain during sex, a new partner, or concern about Chlamydia. Contact your prescriber when breakthrough bleeding persists, becomes troublesome, or starts after a contraceptive change.

Ask whether your contraceptive method or missed doses explain the pattern, whether a pregnancy or infection test is needed, and how long to monitor it. Ask whether Endometrial Polyps or another cause should be considered if bleeding continues.
