Severe Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: What to Know

How the structures involved in Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation differ from normal

Short answer

Severe post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is darkening left after inflammation or injury, often acne or dermatitis, and needs trigger control plus carefully selected treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Flat brown, grey-brown or darker marks
Common triggers
Acne, dermatitis, bites, burns or irritation
Prevention focus
Control inflammation and protect from sunlight

What it means

Inflammation can stimulate pigment production or move pigment deeper into the skin. The result is a flat brown, grey-brown or darker patch where acne, eczema, a bite, burn or other irritation healed. Dark Patches On Skin and Uneven Skin Tone can describe this appearance, but they can also have other causes.

The colour may deepen with sunlight or repeated irritation. New, changing, bleeding or very different marks need examination rather than being assumed to be post-inflammatory. Treating the original inflammation is part of preventing additional marks.

What to do now

Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care, avoid picking and protect exposed skin from sunlight with broad-spectrum sunscreen and clothing. Do not layer strong exfoliants or unregulated lightening products onto irritated skin. A dermatologist may consider Chemical Peel, Skin Brightening Treatment or Picosecond Laser Treatment after assessing the depth of pigment, current inflammation and your skin tone.

Treatment choice should be gradual and supervised because irritation can stimulate more pigment. Ask how to prepare, which products to pause and how to respond to a flare.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review when marks are widespread, rapidly darkening, repeatedly returning, or linked with ongoing itching, rash or acne. Seek prompt assessment for a spot that changes shape, bleeds, crusts or does not behave like the surrounding marks. Get earlier advice if a new product causes burning, swelling, blistering or raw skin.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what caused the pigment, whether acne or Atopic Dermatitis remains active, how deep the colour appears, and which treatment and sun-protection plan is least likely to irritate your skin.

Questions people ask

Does post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation fade?

It may gradually become less noticeable, but the course varies with the trigger, pigment depth, ongoing inflammation and sun exposure.

Can home lightening products make the marks worse?

Yes. Irritation from harsh or unregulated products can prolong inflammation and deepen pigment, so choose a supervised plan.
