Severe dry scalp and dandruff

Dandruff presents with flakes and may be itchy without marked inflammation. Seborrheic dermatitis can add redness and greasy scale, especially around the hairline or ears. Dry air, harsh cleansing, and product buildup may worsen visible flaking, while psoriasis can create thicker plaques. Flaky scalp is a symptom description, not a diagnosis.

Wash regularly with a gentle shampoo and loosen scale without picking. A medicated shampoo treatment may reduce dandruff when used according to its label or a clinician’s directions; allow the product the recommended contact time before rinsing. Avoid very hot water, vigorous brushing, and fragranced products that sting. Keep a note of which products improve or worsen the scalp.

Arrange an appointment if flakes persist after a careful trial of suitable shampoo, spread beyond the scalp, or come with marked redness, pain, bleeding, or patchy hair loss. Prompt care is appropriate for pus, crusting, warmth, swelling, or fever. A clinician may consider topical antifungal treatment when the pattern supports it.
