Severe Dry, Cracked Feet: What You Should Know

Short answer
Severe dry cracked feet need regular moisturising, gentle removal of loose scale, protection from friction, and assessment when fissures are deep or inflamed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main aim
- Restore flexibility and reduce pressure on fissured skin.
- Avoid
- Blades, harsh filing, hot washing, and moisturiser between the toes.
What can cause deep foot cracks
Dry skin becomes less flexible and can split where the heel or sole bears pressure. Thickened skin, long periods standing, open-backed footwear, hot washing, and low humidity can make fissures worse. Scaling between the toes or along the sides of the feet may point to [Athlete's Foot](/conditions/athletes-foot/), while widespread dryness can occur with [Dry Skin](/symptoms/dry-skin/). [Cracked Skin](/symptoms/skin-cracking/) describes the symptom itself, not a single cause.
Foot care at home
Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then dry carefully, including between the toes. Apply a rich moisturiser to the heels and soles soon afterwards and repeat regularly; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can help explain this approach. Wear supportive, closed footwear and clean socks. Do not cut thick skin with blades or aggressively file painful cracks. Keep moisturiser out of open wounds unless a clinician has advised it, and avoid sharing towels if a fungal infection is possible.
When to seek medical care
Arrange assessment for deep or recurrent fissures, bleeding, pus, increasing warmth, swelling, spreading redness, or pain that affects walking. Seek prompt care for fever or feeling unwell. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation, or immune problems should seek advice early when the skin breaks, because a small crack may need careful examination and wound guidance.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern suggests eczema, fungal infection, psoriasis, or pressure-related thickening; which moisturiser is suitable; and how to dress an open fissure. Mention itching, toe-web scaling, new footwear, and whether the cracks recur in the same places.

Questions people ask
Can athlete’s foot cause cracked feet?
Yes. Fungal infection may cause scaling, itching, and splitting, especially around the toes or along the foot edges.
When are cracked feet more concerning?
Deep, bleeding, infected-looking, recurrent, or difficult-to-walk-on fissures need medical review, especially with diabetes or reduced sensation.
