What should you know about severe cough treatment?

A cough is a protective reflex that clears mucus and irritants. Suppressing it may not address the reason it started. A clinician may ask about timing, triggers, mucus, fever, wheeze, reflux symptoms, medicines, smoking, and previous lung problems before choosing treatment.

Acute bronchitis or a common cold may need supportive care, while asthma can require inhaled treatment. Acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, bronchiectasis, and chronic cough each call for a different approach. A cough can be a presentation of these conditions, but the cough alone cannot identify its cause.

For comfort, rest, drink fluids, use warm drinks if soothing, and avoid smoke, vaping, and known irritants. A pharmacist can advise about a suitable cough product, but check ingredients carefully to avoid doubling up medicines. Children need age-appropriate advice.

Take prescribed inhalers or other medicines exactly as directed and ask for a technique check if using an inhaler. Antibiotics are reserved for selected bacterial infections and are not useful for every cough. Treating nasal inflammation, reflux, or airway narrowing may gradually reduce coughing when one of these is driving it.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden chest pain, fainting, confusion, or significant blood in the mucus. Do not wait for a cough remedy to work when breathing is compromised.

Arrange prompt review if the cough is worsening, causes wheeze or chest pain, comes with fever or breathlessness, or continues despite treatment. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or living with heart or lung disease because this can affect the assessment.

Ask what cause is being treated, how quickly improvement should begin, how to use each inhaler or medicine, and whether any product should be avoided with your current medicines. Ask what to do if symptoms worsen and when a further assessment is needed.
