Can strapping help Sever's disease?

Short answer
Strapping may support the foot and reduce heel strain during activity, but it should be fitted and checked by a trained clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Temporary support while the tape is worn
- Safety check
- Remove tape for skin irritation, numbness, or worsening pain
- Best used with
- Activity adjustment and a guided rehabilitation plan
What strapping can and cannot do
Tape can give a child a sense of support and may alter how forces move through the foot while it is worn. It does not remove irritation at the heel growth area or replace a broader activity plan. The tape pattern, tension, skin condition, shoe, and sport all affect whether it is useful. A physiotherapist or other trained clinician can decide whether strapping suits the child's foot and can teach a caregiver how to apply it.
Using support safely
Ask a clinician to demonstrate the method before using tape for sport. Apply it to clean, dry skin without wrapping tightly around the ankle or foot. Remove it if itching, burning, rash, colour change, swelling, numbness, or increasing pain develops, and check the skin afterwards. Combine support with cushioned footwear and reduction of painful running or jumping. Paediatric physiotherapy can address calf flexibility and strength; custom orthotics may be considered when a longer-wearing support is more appropriate.
When to seek care
Stop using the tape and seek advice if symptoms worsen, walking becomes abnormal, or the skin reacts. Prompt assessment is needed after an injury or with marked swelling, redness, warmth, numbness, fever, pain at rest, or night pain. Persistent heel pain should be checked rather than masked with repeated strapping.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether strapping is suitable for your child's symptoms, which tape and pattern to use, how long to leave it on, and whether a skin test is needed. Ask how it fits with exercises, footwear, and the return-to-sport plan.

Questions people ask
Can I strap the heel without an assessment?
It is safer to learn the method from a trained clinician because poor tension or placement can irritate skin or alter foot loading.
Does tape cure Sever's disease?
No. It may offer temporary support, but the underlying irritation still needs sensible loading, footwear, and rehabilitation decisions.
