What should you know about sequestrum in osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis can interfere with blood flow inside bone. A portion may lose its blood supply and separate from healthier bone; this fragment is called a sequestrum. Because antibiotics may not reach dead bone well, the fragment can contribute to ongoing drainage, pain or inflammation. Imaging helps the team assess its size and position, while tissue or fluid sampling may help identify infection.

A sequestrum is not something that can be removed safely at home. The surrounding skin, soft tissue, bone stability and any wound all affect the treatment decision.

Care may involve antibiotics, wound management and surgery to remove infected or dead bone. The surgeon may also clean surrounding tissue and protect the bone while it heals. If removal leaves a gap or weak area, bone grafting may be discussed as part of reconstruction after the infection is controlled.

Take prescribed medicines on schedule and keep follow-up visits. Report increasing drainage, new odour, worsening pain or a change in limb function. Protect the area from pressure and follow weight-bearing instructions exactly.

Seek prompt review for a persistent wound over bone, recurrent drainage, increasing swelling or pain that is not settling. Get urgent help for fever with chills, rapidly spreading redness, severe weakness, confusion, fainting or sudden inability to move or bear weight.

Ask how the sequestrum was identified, whether infection samples are needed, what surgery would involve, and how bone stability will be protected. Ask whether reconstruction or bone grafting may be appropriate and how healing will be monitored.
