What should you know about sequential embryo transfer?

Short answer

Sequential embryo transfer means placing embryos in the uterus in separate planned steps, with timing and embryo selection guided by your IVF treatment plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How sequential transfer works

In a conventional transfer, the clinic places an embryo in the uterus at one planned time. A sequential approach uses more than one planned transfer, which may involve embryos at different developmental stages or timing selected for the uterine lining. The exact schedule varies with embryo development, laboratory practice, cycle monitoring, and your medical history.

The procedure itself uses a thin catheter passed through the cervix. It is not a guarantee of pregnancy, and transferring more than one embryo can increase the chance of a multiple pregnancy. Your clinic should explain why it is proposing this approach and how it balances potential benefit with the risks of multiple pregnancy.

Preparing for the cycle

Ask the fertility team for a written timeline covering medicines, scans, blood tests, embryo decisions, transfer appointments, and pregnancy testing. Micronised progesterone may be prescribed to support the uterine lining; use it exactly as directed and report unusual bleeding or side effects. Tell the clinic about all medicines, allergies, illnesses, and any difficulty following the schedule.

Follow the clinic's instructions about activity, intercourse, and travel because advice can differ by protocol. Keep contact details available after each transfer and clarify who to call outside office hours. Emotional support can be useful because the waiting period and changing plans can be stressful.

When to contact the clinic urgently

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, fever, breathing difficulty, marked abdominal swelling, or rapidly worsening discomfort. These symptoms may need assessment for a treatment complication or another urgent condition. Do not stop progesterone or other prescribed treatment unless the clinical team tells you to do so.

Questions for your doctor

Why are you recommending sequential rather than a single transfer? Which embryos may be used and how is timing decided? What are the risks of a multiple pregnancy in my situation? How should I take progesterone? Which symptoms require urgent review, and when will pregnancy testing take place?

Questions people ask

Is sequential embryo transfer the same as IVF?

It is a transfer approach used within an IVF treatment plan, not a separate fertility treatment by itself.

Can sequential transfer cause twins?

Transferring more than one embryo can increase the chance of a multiple pregnancy, so ask how many embryos are planned and why.
