Sunburn treatment for sensitive skin

Ultraviolet exposure injures the outer skin barrier, which can leave skin hot, red, sore, tight or swollen. Sensitive skin may sting more when products are applied. Peeling can occur as damaged surface cells shed, and scratching or removing peeling skin can increase irritation. A sunburn is different from a chronic rash, although conditions such as [Rosacea](/conditions/rosacea/) may also flare with heat and sun. Move out of direct sun and cool the skin with a cool, damp cloth or a cool shower; avoid ice directly on the skin. Pat dry and apply a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser or soothing gel if it does not sting. Drink fluids, wear soft loose clothing and leave blisters intact. Do not use exfoliants, perfumes, essential oils or harsh antiseptics on the area. Contact a clinician for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, repeated vomiting, dizziness, confusion, dehydration or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus or spreading redness. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, fainting or swelling involving the face. Children, older adults and people with significant medical conditions may need earlier advice after a substantial burn.
