Selsun Blue for Ringworm: What to Know

Selsun Blue is a selenium sulfide shampoo intended mainly for certain scalp conditions. It is not a standard treatment for ringworm on the body, and using it on a rash can irritate already inflamed skin. Ringworm is a fungal infection, so treatment should match the site and extent of the infection.

Ringworm can cause an expanding, scaly or itchy rash with a more active edge, but other rashes can look similar. A rash is not proof of a fungal infection. Scalp involvement is different from a small patch on the trunk or limb and may need prescription treatment. A clinician can distinguish ringworm from eczema, irritation, or another cause by examining the skin and, when needed, testing a scale sample.

Do not put Selsun Blue on broken skin, near the eyes, or on the genitals unless a clinician specifically directs you. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sharing towels, clothing, combs, or sports equipment, and wash fabrics that touch the rash. Ask a pharmacist or dermatologist about a suitable topical antifungal treatment for a limited body rash. More extensive, recurrent, or scalp infection may require oral antifungal treatment.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, crusted, or not improving with appropriate care. Seek prompt advice for scalp scaling with hair breakage or hair loss, infection in a child, or reduced immunity. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, or a widespread blistering reaction.
