What should you know about selective IUGR types?

Clinicians do not classify the pattern from size alone. They compare estimated weights and abdominal measurements, then examine umbilical-cord blood flow, fluid, and other circulation findings. The pattern may be described by whether blood flow is reassuring, reduced, absent, or showing reversal, and whether it stays stable or changes.

Shared-placenta twins require particular attention because the babies may be connected through placental blood vessels. The pregnancy type, gestational stage, scan trend, and each baby's heart pattern all affect what a type means for care.

Keep all appointments and ask for the written explanation of the pattern found on your scan. A Growth Scan tracks size and fluid, while Fetal Heart Monitoring checks each baby's wellbeing when appropriate for the stage of pregnancy.

Management may involve frequent outpatient review, specialist assessment, or hospital monitoring. If continuing pregnancy becomes less safe, the team may discuss birth, including Induction of Labour when it is suitable. The plan can change as circulation, growth, or heart monitoring changes.

Call your maternity service promptly if fetal movement is reduced or noticeably different, or if you have bleeding, leaking fluid, regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, or severe headache with visual changes. Do not wait for the next scheduled scan when these symptoms occur.

Ask which pattern has been identified, whether the twins share a placenta, what the blood-flow results show, how often monitoring is needed, and which findings would lead to hospital care or birth planning.
