What should you know about seeking a second opinion?

Another oncology team may review your medical notes, scans, blood tests and biopsy results. A specialist pathologist can reassess tissue slides, while digital pathology may support remote review and comparison of images. The second team may agree with the first plan, suggest a different sequence, or explain why more information is needed before treatment.

You do not need to wait for a disagreement before requesting another view. It can be useful after a new cancer diagnosis, when surgery has been proposed, when the cancer type is unusual, or when the expected benefits and burdens of options feel difficult to weigh.

Ask the current clinic for copies of the pathology report, scan reports, relevant images, treatment notes and medication list. Write down your diagnosis as you understand it, your priorities, and the questions that remain unanswered. Give the reviewing team permission to obtain records if required.

Ask whether the opinion is based on the complete pathology and imaging record, whether a pathology review is recommended, and whether the proposed plan changes if the diagnosis or stage is revised. If surgery is being considered, ask how the opinion affects the timing and type of tumour removal surgery.

Contact your treating team promptly if symptoms are worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you develop new weakness or confusion, or you have heavy bleeding. A second opinion should not delay urgent assessment or a treatment that your clinicians say cannot safely wait.

What records and tissue samples should be sent for review? What part of the diagnosis or treatment plan is most uncertain? Which options are reasonable for my cancer and goals? Could waiting for another opinion change safety or timing? Who will coordinate the recommendations if the opinions differ?
