Secukinumab in Ankylosing Spondylitis: What to Know

Ankylosing spondylitis can cause inflammatory back pain, Joint Stiffness, and reduced spinal or hip movement. Secukinumab blocks an inflammatory messenger involved in the immune response. It is used for selected people when the specialist believes the expected benefit fits the person's symptoms, previous treatment, health history, and preferences.

The medicine does not replace movement and rehabilitation. Exercise Therapy, Physiotherapy, and sometimes Hydrotherapy can support mobility, posture, strength, and breathing while medication addresses inflammation. Improvement is assessed through symptoms, function, examination, and follow-up rather than by one symptom alone.

Before starting, tell the prescriber about repeated infections, tuberculosis exposure, inflammatory bowel symptoms, allergies, pregnancy plans, and every medicine or supplement you use. Ask which vaccines are suitable before or during treatment. Use doses on the schedule provided, store the medicine as instructed, and report problems at injection sites or changes in symptoms.

Keep a simple record of Morning Joint Stiffness, pain, activity, and any infections. Continue the movement plan within your ability, and discuss a flare or persistent Reduced Range of Motion rather than changing treatment yourself. Anti-Inflammatory Medication may remain part of an overall plan if your clinician considers it appropriate.

Contact your care team promptly for fever, a persistent cough, painful urination, severe diarrhoea, new abdominal pain, or an infection that is worsening. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, severe weakness, or symptoms of a serious infection. New eye pain, light sensitivity, or blurred vision also needs prompt review.
