What should you know about seborrheic keratosis peeling off?

A raised seborrheic keratosis may shed dry surface scale when it is rubbed, scratched or caught. The remaining area can look pink, raw or crusted for a short time. Peeling does not prove that the entire growth has gone, and a similar-looking patch may have another cause. A clinician can check the original lesion and decide whether further examination is needed.

Wash gently with water and mild cleanser, pat dry and avoid pulling attached skin. Apply a plain protective moisturiser around the spot if it is dry, and cover it with a clean dressing when clothing keeps rubbing it. Do not scrape the surface or use wart medicines. If you want the growth removed, professional options can include cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, or electrosurgery after the diagnosis is checked.

Book a skin assessment if peeling is followed by ongoing bleeding, a non-healing sore, increasing pain, a new dark or uneven area, rapid growth or repeated crusting. Seek prompt care for pus, warmth and spreading redness, or if you feel feverish. A lesion that peels away is not automatically dangerous, but it should not be diagnosed from the shed skin alone.
