Seborrheic keratosis on black skin

A seborrheic keratosis can be brown, black, grey or close to the surrounding skin. On deeply pigmented skin, a dark lesion may be more noticeable by its raised, rough or stuck-on surface than by colour alone. One growth may be smooth while another is crumbly or waxy. A photograph can help track change, but it cannot confirm the diagnosis. A new, uneven or evolving mark should be checked rather than labelled from colour alone.

A dermatologist can examine the growth and discuss whether it needs monitoring or removal. Cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, and electrosurgery are possible approaches for selected lesions. On black skin, ask specifically about temporary or lasting lightening or darkening after inflammation, as well as scar care. Do not use acids, blades or unprescribed burning products at home; injury can make pigment changes harder to manage.

Arrange prompt review for a lesion that changes in shape, shade or surface, bleeds, crusts, becomes sore, or grows unlike your established seborrheic keratoses. Seek advice if a spot is difficult to distinguish from a mole or another pigmented lesion.
