Sebaceous cyst self care: what to know

A sebaceous cyst is commonly used to describe an epidermoid cyst: a sac beneath the skin containing keratin. It may feel smooth and movable, and a small opening can appear at the surface. Home measures may reduce friction and irritation, but they do not remove the cyst wall. Cutting, piercing, or repeatedly pressing it can introduce bacteria, increase inflammation, and make later treatment harder.

Wash gently with mild soap and water, pat dry, and choose loose clothing if the lump rubs against fabric. A warm, damp cloth may feel soothing when the area is tender; use comfortable warmth and stop if the skin becomes irritated. Do not try to drain it or apply harsh antiseptics. If it opens by itself, cover it with clean gauze, wash your hands before and after touching it, and seek advice if drainage continues. A clinician may discuss steroid injection, drainage, or cyst removal depending on inflammation and recurrence.

Arrange prompt medical review for spreading redness, increasing warmth, marked swelling, worsening pain, pus-like drainage, fever, or a lump that is changing quickly. Seek assessment for any new or uncertain skin lump, especially if it does not settle. An inflamed cyst can resemble an abscess, while other lumps need a different evaluation; do not diagnose it from appearance alone.
