What should you know about a sebaceous cyst painful to touch?

Pain often develops when the cyst wall becomes inflamed, pressure builds inside the sac, or its contents leak into nearby skin. Friction from clothing, helmets, shaving, or repeated touching can add irritation. Tenderness does not by itself establish the cause of a lump; a clinician may need to examine it.

Redness, warmth, swelling, or cloudy drainage can occur with inflammation or infection. A painful cyst can also feel harder or less mobile than before.

Leave the cyst intact and keep hands, jewellery, combs, and tight clothing away from it. Wash gently, pat dry, and note whether pain, redness, size, or drainage changes. Book an appointment if tenderness persists, returns, or interferes with sleep or daily activities.

Treatment depends on the examination. A clinician may discuss an intralesional steroid injection for inflammation, drainage when there is a collection to release, or cyst removal when the sac needs to be addressed.

Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, chills, or a red streak extending away from the lump. Seek urgent help if severe swelling affects the eye, mouth, breathing, or movement, or if the pain follows significant trauma.

Ask what is making the area tender, whether drainage or anti-inflammatory treatment is suitable, whether the sac remains after symptoms settle, and how to reduce rubbing while it heals.
